Together We are making a positive impact

Our commitment to protecting animals and nature extends far beyond our daily business. We strive to actively contribute to the preservation of endangered species and habitats. Only by doing so can we create a sustainable and livable future for both people and wildlife.

This desire gave rise to the David Rio Foundation.

Our mission?

Together for a sustainable future!

The David Rio Foundation is committed to a harmonious relationship between people and nature. Our mission is based on three central pillars: Species Conservation, Community Advancement and Sustainability.

We work to protect and preserve the natural world, empower local and global communities, and promote sustainable practices that respect our environment. Through education, awareness-building and direct action, we are creating a world where nature thrives, communities are strengthened and future generations have a healthy and diverse planet.

Working with partners such as the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), we drive positive global change and advocate for the harmonious coexistence of people and ecosystems.

This is what we stand for

1. SAN FRANCISCO SPIRIT

We are deeply connected to our Californian hometown, valuing its diversity, liberal spirit, and historical contributions to civil rights movements in America.

2. sustainability

We strive for environmentally friendly packaging, using materials that ensure food safety and aroma preservation while minimizing our carbon footprint. Wildlife conservation remains a top priority in our collaboration with IFAW.

3. education and awareness

By actively advocating for wildlife protection, we foster a deeper understanding of environmental conservation and sustainable practices, encouraging people worldwide to contribute to preserving nature.

4. inclusivity and diversity

Our family-owned company is predominantly led by women. We embrace a diverse team of people from different backgrounds, ethnicities, and religions. This diversity has made us strong and shaped us into who we are today.

5. AUTHENTICITY and NATURALNESS

We didn’t invent chai. That’s precisely why we honor the tradition of authentic Indian chai enjoyment, using natural ingredients from the most sustainable sources possible.

6. innovation

We promote creative solutions to meet the challenges of environmental protection and nature conservation and maximize the impact of our work.

Our current programs

In collaboration with leading animal welfare organizations, we are committed to protecting wildlife, preserving natural habitats and supporting affected communities. Our programs promote sustainable solutions for environmental protection and the promotion of biodiversity.

Room to Roam

The "Room to Roam" project, in collaboration with the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), aims to secure and connect the habitat of savannah elephants in Africa.

By creating corridors, these majestic animals and other wildlife can roam unhindered and thrive in their natural habitats.

The project is based on over 20 years of research and strengthens the conservation of elephants in East and Southern Africa.

The Elephant Vanilla Chai from the “Endangered Species Line” supports this project.

David Rio Ranger Base

In 2019, we launched the David Rio Ranger Base together with IFAW. It is located in the Illaingarunyoni Conservancy and provides protection for rare wildlife species.

The base not only provides accommodation for the rangers, but also enables constant monitoring of the area to combat threats such as poaching and secure the elephant habitat.

Black Rhino Program

As part of the "Room to Roam" project, we are working with the Black Rhino Conservation Program to protect endangered black rhinos.

The focus is on the restoration and protection of habitats in the Tsavo Conservation Area to ensure a stable and sustainable population of these impressive animals.

The Black Rhino Cocoa Chai from the “Endangered Species Line” supports this project.

Financial education for women

We actively support women in Esiteti, Kenya, through a financial education program funded by IFAW and the David Rio Foundation.

The goal is to equip the women of the Osotua Esiteti Women’s Group with entrepreneurial skills, enabling them to sustainably increase their income and improve their quality of life.

Cultural handicrafts

The Osotua Esiteti Women’s Group collaboratively creates artisanal crafts, the sales of which directly benefit the women. With the support of IFAW and the David Rio Foundation, this initiative has significantly improved the living standards of nearly 200 women and their families. Additionally, our efforts provide them with access to education and healthcare.

Past programs

Save The Last Tigers

The "Save The Last Tigers" campaign by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) is dedicated to protecting wild tigers. We fight poaching, the trade in tiger body parts and products, and secure crucial habitats. Since 2011, David Rio has supported IFAW through annual donations, which have contributed to raising awareness among Chinese authorities about the illegal trade in tiger bone wine. Our donations also aid in rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned tigers and ensuring their safe rewilding.

Amboseli Elephant Project

In 2015, David Rio began partnering with IFAW as part of the Amboseli Elephant Project, which protects the elephants of Amboseli National Park in Kenya. In collaboration with Cynthia Moss from National Geographic, we work to safeguard 1,400 elephants from threats like poaching and human settlement. By securing 16,000 acres outside the park and supporting the Maasai community, we are making a significant contribution to the protection of these majestic animals and their habitats.

History and partnerships

The David Rio Foundation was created by dedicated David Rio Chai and Tea employees who are committed to conservation, sustainability and animal welfare. With a deep connection to the personal stories and commitments of the team members, the foundation is a reflection of the values that have shaped the company since its inception.

Among the founders is Scott Lowe, who carries on the legacy of his grandfather, who established a bird sanctuary in Montana. Mboone Umbima, a Kenyan, developed a deep connection to African wildlife at an early age, which was further strengthened through her extensive experience in the nonprofit sector. Their shared values ultimately led to the founding of the David Rio Foundation.

Strategic Partnerships

In 2011, David Rio formed a significant partnership with the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW). This collaboration is based on the shared goal of making a positive impact on animals, people, and the environment both locally and globally. IFAW, known for its holistic approach to conservation, has since been an important partner. They have helped us expand our understanding of conservation and directly involved us in key projects with their expertise. Through this partnership, we continue to build on our vision and strengthen our commitment to a healthier planet and the well-being of its inhabitants.
