The Traditional Preparation
The base of Chai consists of four essential ingredients:
- Black or green tea
- Milk (or milk substitutes like oat or rice milk)
- Sweeteners such as sugar (white or brown) or honey
- A spice blend known as "Masala"
Preparation varies across regions in India. A very common method starts by heating water and milk with sugar. Freshly grated ginger is then added along with the special spice mix (Masala). The mixture is brought to a boil, and then a teaspoon of black tea is added. After the chai is briefly boiled, it is removed from the heat and left to steep for about 10 minutes to allow the flavors to fully develop. Finally, the chai is strained and served.
